During the post-World War II boom, Pinole and the surrounding area expanded dramatically. The town grew as a suburban bedroom community within the San Francisco/Oakland commuter belt after Interstate 80 was built in 1958. During this time, much of the town’s original industry was displaced, and it became primarily residential.

Today, the town is recognized for its Fitzgerald Drive “big box” shopping center and Pinole Vista Shopping Center, which runs parallel to Richmond’s Hilltop Area. The downtown area still has a lot of turn-of-the-century architecture and is being conserved as a historic area by the city’s development department.
